Air pollution-the city is crowded and the mountains surround the city trapping automobile exhaust and other pollutants that the city's huge population generates. 2. built on drained lakebed- vibrations that earthquakes send through earth grow much stronger and more damaging when they pass through the soft loose soils of a lakebed, making Mexico City highly vulnerable to the effects of earthquakes.
  2. What two types of islands are found in the Caribbean?- Volcanic islands and coral reef islands
  3. Describe the climate in the Tropical Zone.- It may be rainy or dry, but it is typically hot because it is located near the equator. The temperature is always lower at higher elevations, but in the tropical zone all elevations are warmer than they are elsewhere.
  4. How have tectonic plates affected Latin America’s physical geography? Give two examples.- Volcanoes and earthquakes frequently occur in Mexico and in many other parts in Latin America because of the movement of five tectonic plates.

  1. Explain the use of each of the three Maya calendars.- 1.- 260 day calender of sacred days. 2. 365 day calender based on the sun's movement. 3.- and a calender that measured the number of days that had been passed since a fixed starting point.
  2. Why was warfare so important to the Aztec?- Because they wanted to maintain a powerful empire and the Aztec believed that anyone who died in battle had the great honor of dying for Huitzilopochtli, The Aztec God of war.
  3. Describe two means of communication used by the Inca.- 1.- They built roads so runners could pass messages on from one person to another person. it was important to the Inca because their empires spread out over thousand of miles. 2.- they kept records by tying knots in a series of strings called quipu. They didn't have a written language so it was all verbal.
  4. What types of changes took place in Latin America once the Spanish took control?- the Spanish enslaved many Native Americans and forced them to do labor, the Spanish worked hard to convert them to Christianity, Spanish began growing corn, tomatoes, and peppers, and manufactured products, food, and animals from Spain were shipped to Latin America.
